Electronic Arts (EA) has acquired Codemasters, the British video game studio known for games like Operation Flashpoint and Grid, in a $1.2 billion deal. With this acquisition, EA has added its racing game rival to its kitty. The studio behind the Need For Speed, Real Racing and Burnout franchise of racing games, will now have games like Grid, Dirt, Project Cars and others under its banner. EA announced this via Twitter and its blogpost.

Game franchises like Grid and Dirt are seen as direct rivals of Need For Speed. EA has said that Codemasters will remain an independent group even after the acquisition.
In the blogpost, EA said: “During this time we’ve followed and admired our colleagues at Codemasters, who have created some of our favorite racing franchises such as Formula 1, DIRT, Project CARS and GRID. We have seen the team innovate racing game technology and make some of the most fun games we’ve ever played. We’re thrilled by this new opportunity to bring you even more racing games, more often. The union also unlocks the potential for us to create new innovative ways to interact with each other and enjoy our passion for racing games together.”
