Discord has introduced its audio-only chat room feature called ‘Stage Channels’ to take on popular rival Clubhouse. Discord Stage Channel will be available across Android, iOS, web, Windows and other platforms like macOS and Linux. Discord is the latest to join the audio-only chat room bandwagon after popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Telegram bringing its own Clubhouse-like alternatives.
“Stage channels are a new type of channel available for Community servers that allow you to share a focused conversation with select individuals to an audience of listeners,” explained Discord in an official blog post.
There will be a “stage moderator” who will be able to decide who’s speaking “and can add, remove, or mute an existing speaker.” Audience members can also participate by “raising” their hands during an event if they want to speak. Stage moderators can allow listeners to take the stage and talk and then move them back to the audience.
To try out Stage Channels, Discord users will first need to enable Community on their server, by visiting Server Settings > Community. The new platform can be used for audio-only gatherings like AMA sessions, interviews, book reading clubs, podcasts and more.
Twitter already has a Clubhouse rival called Spaces and soon Facebook and Spotify will also join the list. LinkedIn is also gearing up to being its own Clubhouse rival. The professional social networking platform has confirmed that it is also working on an audio feature.
