As Australia’s frustration increased with every passing over during the final session – in which Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari were involved in a match-saving partnership – Paine increased his diatribes.
During such a crosstalk, while Nathan Lyon was bowling, Paine told Ashwin, “I can’t wait to get you to the Gabba Ash (Ashwin). I will tell you what, woo hoo (incessant laughter).”
To this, Ashwin immediately responded, “Just like we want to get you to India that will be your last series.”
Paine replied, “Maybe. Are you a selector here as well?” He went on, “At least my teammates like me, dickhead. I’ve got a lot more Indian friends than you do. Even your teammates think you’re a goose. Don’t they? Every one of them.”
Ashwin then pulled out of the next delivery and curtly told Paine, “Tell me when you’re done.”
To which Paine retorted, “I’ll talk all day mate.”
“Wait until you get to the Gabba, pal,” he said again after a pause.
In the very next over bowled by Lyon, Paine was at it again. This time he tried to break Ashwin’s concentration by saying: “How many IPL teams really wanted you in their team when you begged every single one of them to have you?”
After all the jibes he was taking behind the stumps, Paine was unable to carry out his primary job of pouching catches as a keeper.
He immediately dropped Vihari’s catch off Mitchell Starc’s bowling, having earlier grassed Rishabh Pant twice during the day!
