“Ganguly was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries after which a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage,” Dr Saroj Mondal, whose team performed the procedure at Woodlands Hospital, said.
A decision on whether to implant more stents will be taken later depending on his condition.
“He will be under strict observation for the next couple of days. We will be taking a decision on our next course of action depending on his improvement. His other parameters are fine and needs to be in the hospital for the next three to four days,” Mondal said.
Ganguly was rushed to the hospital Saturday afternoon following a complaint of chest pain.
“He had an acute myocardial infarction (MI). We have found three blocks in his heart. We have conducted a primary angioplasty on him and one stent has been inserted. He is awake and absolutely stable,” Mondal said.
“He suffered a myocardial infarction while doing the treadmill this morning. He had a similar experience Friday also. He was rushed to the hospital immediately and that helped us a lot in treating him,” the doctor said.
An MI, commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when blood flow decreases or stops to a part of the heart, causing damage to the heart muscle.
Earlier in the day, Ganguly was first admitted to the emergency ward and given preliminary treatment and put through investigations. He was later taken to another ward at the same hospital after he was stabilised. Doctors said he was out of “any immediate danger”. The hospital formed a three-member medical board headed by cardiologist Dr Saroj Mondal.
He was working out at the gym at his home when he felt dizzy and experienced chest pain, family members said.
Wife Dona Ganguly and elder brother Snehasis Ganguly, who is also a former first class cricketer, were at the hospital. State sports minister and former state cricketer Laxmiratan Shukla, too, rushed to the hospital, where he was joined by senior Cricket Association of Bengal officials.
The state chief minister Mamata Banerjee too called on Ganguly. “It’s difficult to accept that such a young and fit sportsperson like him could have a condition like this. An angioplasty has been done and the block has been removed. Sourav is now relieved of his chest discomfiture. He is doing well now and I wish him a speedy recovery. Doctors have done a good job,” said Mamata.
The CM also tweeted about the development, wishing Ganguly a “speedy recovery”.
