Gill has been the most consistent scorer for the Kolkata Knight Riders, but as an opener, the stylish right-hander has failed to fire in the Powerplay, which was an area of concern for KKR in the last season of Indian Premier League. With the new edition of IPL kicking off on Friday, Gill is hoping to get his act together and help KKR get off to flying starts.
“I think last year we didn’t have many great Powerplay. But, hopefully this time it’s going to be different. We have a set gameplan and I am sure it will be a lot better than last year,” the 21-year-old told TOI.
Gill has been opening the innings for the Knight Riders, but is yet to find a settled partner at the top. But that seemed to be a non-issue for the Punjabi lad.
“I don’t think having different opening partners has affected my game, since I am comfortable batting with anyone. I just want to play my game and bat according to situations. If we get a good start in the Powerplay, then it’s all about capitalising on it. If you don’t, then we have to find ways to get back into the game,” said Gill, who scored 440 runs in 14 matches last season.
Eoin Morgan took over the KKR captaincy last season after Dinesh Karthik gave up mid-way to concentrate on his batting. With Morgan getting a full season this time around, Gill is looking forward to playing under him, “He’s someone who comes and asks his players what they need and what needs to be done so that we can improve. He is always very supportive and motivating. Morgan is a really calm skipper.”
With Harbhajan Singh joining the KKR line-up, which already had lethal spin weapons in the form of Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav, the trio could well give the oppositions some headaches.
Reflecting on KKR’s latest possession Harbhajan, Gill said: “He is a very experienced campaigner and he has done well in one of the toughest venues for spinners, which is Mumbai. He has played in the IPL for a long time. With him coming in, it brings a lot to the table.”
With the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hitting the nation, life in a biobubble has become difficult for the players. “It’s really hard when you are not able to go out and mentally refresh yourself for the next game. But we have to get used to it,” said Gill about living this newnormal life.
