BENGALURU: In the previous season of the IPL, Indian talent came to the fore at Royal Challengers Bangalore. In a young Devdutt Padikkal, they found an opening batsman, who outshone skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, emerging as the highest run-getter for the side with 473 runs. Spin all-rounder Washington Sundar and the pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini delivered the good with the ball.
In the upcoming edition of the T20 league, the three-time finalists are again looking to make the most of homegrown talent. Simon Katich, the head coach of RCB, outlined the plans for the season ahead.
Looking ahead at the 14th edition:
This year we are looking at building on last season and getting the younger Indian players to play more matches. We did that last season as well and some of them went on to do well in India in the last six months. We tried to have a consistent core group of players and build on that. That’s the focus this year as well. Also, with some new overseas additions, we are trying to find those missing pieces that prevented us from going further last season.

Putting together a winning combination:
We are trying to build on players like Devdutt Padikkal, (Mohammad) Siraj and (Navdeep) Saini. We know that Virat (Kohli) and (Yuzvendra) Chahal are experienced campaigners. To complement them, we have some quality overseas players. We know what AB (de Villiers) and (Glenn) Maxwell can do. Add to it the experienced players like Dan Christian, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa. With Kyle Jamieson and Finn Allen we have a different mix. Rather than having just batsmen and bowlers, we have more allrounders this season.
On starting the campaign on the slower surfaces in Chennai:
We know it (playing spin) was an area of concern last year and at times we found it tough particularly through the middle phase of our batting innings. We are yet to see the surface but in Chennai it has historically been a turner. That said, there have been times when it has been high scoring and the dew can be a factor as well. We will have to weigh all of that once we get a couple of nights of training.
On the batting depth:
A number of players in the camp have put their hands up for selection with the bat. We picked up Rajat Patidar, Mohd Azharrudeen and Suyash (Prabhudessai) in the auction. Sachin Baby also comes in with experience. So, we have options in the top, middle and lower order. We potentially have more batting depth than we had last year.
On the inclusion of Glenn Maxwell:
We have a role for Maxwell which will enable him to have success. We needed a dynamic batsman in the middle phase of the innings and he provides that.
