The report also said that the total number of Indian billionaires rose to 140 this year from 102 last year and their combined wealth nearly doubled to 596 billion dollars.
While Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos topped the global for fourth year in a row, Reliance Industries (RIL) chief Mukesh Ambani became the richest person in Asia again and ranked number 10 on the global list.
Top three richest Indians added just over $100 billion
With a net worth of $84.5 billion, Mukesh Ambani reclaimed the top spot as Asia richest man, dethroning Chinese business tycoon Jack Ma ho was the richest person in the region a year ago.
The RIL chairman added nearly $48 billion to his fortune since last year.
With a five-fold rise in fortune, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani is the second richest person in India with a net worth of $50.5 billion. He is ranked 24th on the global list of billionaires.
The infrastructure tycoon added nearly $42 billion to his wealth as shares of Adani Enterprises and Adani Green Energy jumped higher.
The third spot in India’s top richest billionaires 2021 list was bagged by HCL Technologies founder Shiv Nadar. He is ranked 71st globally and has a net worth of $23.5 billion.
Other people in the list included DMart founder Radhakishan Damani, Kotak Mahindra Bank CEO Uday Kotak, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group Kumar Mangalam Birla, founder of Sun Pharmaceuticals Dilip Shanghvi and Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Mittal.
Rise in wealth due to pandemic boost
Vaccine billionaire Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute of India bagged the eight position on the India rich list while, he ranked 169th on the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires with a net worth of $12.7 billion.
Run by Cyrus’s 40-year-old son Adar Poonawalla, Serum Institute joined the Covid-19 vaccine race early by forging multiple partnerships and investing $800 million in building a new factory.
Jabs of Poonawalla’s Covishield, the made-in-India version of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by the Oxford University-AstraZeneca combine, are now being given across the country and exported as well.
While founder of Sun Pharmaceuticals, Dilip Shanghvi climbed backed into the top 10 list with a total net worth of $10.9 billion.
Bezos is world’s richest
With a total wealth of $177 billion, Jeff Bezos retained the world’s richest person for the fourth straight year.
His networth jumped by $64 billion as compared to last year, mainly due to surge in the company’s shares.
On the second spot is SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who was the biggest gainer in dollar terms. Musk’s fortune ballooned to $151 billion, a whopping $126.4 billion more than a year ago, when he had ranked 31 and was worth $24.6 billion, it said.
French billionaire Bernard Arnault, who oversees an empire of 70 brands, including Louis Vuitton and Sephora, is the third richest person in the world with a net worth of USD 150 billion, followed by chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates ($124 billion), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ($97 billion).
The top 10 richest are worth $1.15 trillion, up by two-thirds from $686 billion last year. Altogether, Europe’s billionaires are $1 trillion richer than a year ago.
US has most number of billionaires
The United States leads the list of countries with most billionaires with a total of 724, while China is closing the gap with 698 billionaires.
Last year, the US had 614 billionaires and China had 456 (including 66 from Hong Kong and 1 Macao).
Altogether, 1,149 billionaires from Asia-Pacific countries are worth $4.7 trillion, while the US billionaires are worth a total $4.4 trillion.
